No fees? No such thing.

Banks and other fund transfer companies offering low fees or no commissions often hide their true costs with poor exchange rates. They might even advertise "no fees", but instead adjust their exchange rate to make up the difference. And then some.

Many banks and money transfer companies offer you little or no pricing detail. Most update their exchange rates only once a day, so you can get better rates only by negotiating (and only during their office hours). By contrast, OANDA provides live rates all the time, so you know exactly what you will be paying, and exactly what you've paid. Our quick quote tool provides you with a real-time quote when you need it.

How much difference can the exchange rate make?

The spread is the difference between the price at which you can sell your primary currency and what you have to pay to buy the delivery currency.

A spread of 2.5% (the common charge at the typical bank) might not seem like a lot, but it can really add up, especially when you're sending large amounts of money. fxGlobalTransfer spreads vary by currency but are typically less than 0.2% (20 pips), a small fraction of what most banks charge.

Number of units Foreign Exchange Cost (Banks 2.5%) Foreign Exchange Cost (OANDA 0.03% *)
10,000 250 3
1,000,000 25,000 300
* fxGlobalTransfer spreads vary by currency pair and by market activity. The Euro/US dollar spread, for example, can be as low as 0.02%. In times of low market liquidity (such as on the weekend when markets and banks are closed) spreads may be 0.1% or higher.

How can OANDA offer these low rates?

OANDA provides low rates for our clients because we conduct a large volume of foreign exchange transactions. Our patented trading system is completely automated, so there are no middlemen and we pay no commissions to sales people or traders.

OANDA is registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) and we are a member of the National Futures Association (NFA # 0325821). Full regulatory compliance means fewer restrictions for our clients. For example, with fxGlobalTransfer there are no minimum or maximum transfer limits.
